Echoes of Identity.

Can the unknown be more beautiful than the known?

2023 · PROOF Grails IV · 3D and AI portraiture · Editioned series · Ethereum

A series made for a blind drop. Collectors chose a mystery, a blurred face and a single question, before it resolved into one of three revealed variations on identity, duality, and self-reflection.

The work

Echoes of Identity was made for Grails IV, a drop by PROOF where collectors choose the work before they know who made it. So I kept my style concealed and let the piece stand on its own.

For the minting phase I made a placeholder, a woman's blurred face with a question written across it, can the unknown be more beautiful than the known. It was a nudge to sit in the mystery and choose on feeling rather than on a name.

Days later the curtain lifted. Each piece resolved into one of three variations, every one a study of identity, duality, and self-reflection.

The reveal

After minting, the blur clears and the face resolves into hyperreal detail. Each collector's piece becomes one of three variations.

Each piece carries a one-line caption, and a few hold a short haiku in its place. The original placeholder was held back as a reserved piece for anyone who collects all three variations.

The collection lives as editioned works on Ethereum. Each minted piece resolves into one of the revealed variations, with the pre-reveal placeholder held as part of the project history.

Process

The faces begin as 3D sculpts before they are rendered, blurred, and worked into the grain that gives the series its uncertain, half-developed look.

Statement

This whole project is an invitation to look inward. By asking collectors to choose on the artwork alone and not the artist, it questions the weight we give to names, and what we decide a piece is really worth.

Who are we, and what layers hide beneath the face we present?
