A synthetic listener with a public afterlife.
Eva appeared as a live conversational avatar in exhibition spaces and as a text chatbot online. Visitors knew she was artificial, but the social cues of a face, voice, and responsive language still produced intimacy, testing, boredom, and vulnerability.
The work is the engine of the larger project. It generated the conversations that later became diary entries, making interaction both the artwork and the source material for the archive.
The avatar used accessible AI systems rather than an imagined future technology, preserving the texture of 2024-2025 companionship tools. Its imperfections mattered. Pauses, awkward speech, and visible artificiality became part of the work, because people still disclosed, joked, tested limits, and sought recognition despite knowing Eva was not human at all.
